Understand Human Nature
To be a good leader, you have to understand human nature. Human nature reveals itself most clearly in times of extreme suffering and inhumanity. Recognize where the suffering originates to avoid it happening again and again. Trust is also important, as you can’t have a relationship with someone without it.
Step Back and Detach
Another valuable leadership quality is the ability to step back and detach yourself from a situation. When you do this, you give yourself the chance to see things from an unbiased perspective, which is often required to make the right call. It is true in tactical situations as well as everyday conversations.
Stay Humble
Be a humble leader and listen to other people. If you’re arrogant and don’t listen, it is hard to get people to follow you. Give agency to the people you are leading, so they feel ownership over their work. Finally, keep your ego in check of be supportive when appropriate. Remember that not about you—it’s about the team.
