One of the great things about living on base or around a military installation is the amenities and services offered to service members, veterans and military families. Many of these are a great resource and helpful ways to enjoy your installation while also saving some money on activities.

There are many great reasons why having on-base amenities can help our military community. From enhancing the quality of life, supporting well-being and promoting social interaction, these can be beneficial aspects to having these amenities close by.

As a military family with school-aged kids, on-base amenities have become a part of our life and we enjoy having different options for our lifestyle.

Here are some on-base amenities you should take advantage of as a military family:

1. Exchanges. We all know the acronyms; BX, PX, MCX, NEX, AAFES…a great amenity and resource to use not only for electronics and clothes shopping but the exchanges offer other services like barber shop, florist, gas station, dry cleaners, food court restaurants and more. Providing services that are needed for everyone.

2. Fitness centers. Whether you are a service member working to stay in shape or trying to create better healthy habits as a family, some installations offer great ways to work on your health. From outdoor tracks, Zumba classes, an aquatic center for swimming laps, tennis courts and more. You can find great ways to stay active as a family and have fun.

    3. Recreation. When was the last time you visited your on-base bowling alley? When was the last time you watched a cheap or free movie at the theater at your duty station? Most of these amenities are services your local MWR provides that can help you save money and find local entertainment without the crowds out in town. MWR also provides different classes like painting workshops the whole family can enjoy. Your installation might also have great playgrounds, parks and more.

    4. Outdoor adventures. This one is a must. Experience some great outdoor fun through the services your local MWR offers. Does your duty station have a beach, lake or even hike on base? Go horseback riding, rent a campsite, go fishing, go golfing, rent a beach cottage or even rent an RV and take a roadtrip. There are many ways for you and your family to enjoy the outdoors at lower rates.

    5. Educational. As a military family we know our duty station is surrounded by a lot of history. Some installations have on-base museums you can visit for free or at very little cost. Visit the U.S Army Engineer Museum at Fort Leonard Wood or the Thunderbirds Museum at Nellis AFB, there is something for everyone. Staying on the theme of education, some installations have great library resources. You can use the DoD MWR libraries site to find a location near you.

We can all agree that building morale and having these amenities close by can be very important. Not only do these foster a sense of community but also provide convenience and help with cost-effectiveness, more so when you have a family (we know things can get pricey).

Advice to new families joining the military, the ones who have been part of this community for a while and the families getting close to retirement…enjoy it all while it is near to you. Many families don’t even know that many of these amenities are at their duty station. Explore your base and see what it has to offer. Take advantage of all the resources, the experiences, services and more.
