Welcome to your new home! Moving day can be a whirlwind, but with this simple guide, you’ll breeze through your first 24 hours like a pro. Whether it’s your first PCS or your fifth, these steps will help you settle in quickly and turn your house into a home.

Hour 1: Survey the New Terrain

Start by exploring your new space. Walk through each room, noting any issues like stuck windows or scuffed floors. Since your HHG (Household Goods) and UAB (Unaccompanied Baggage) won’t arrive before you, this is your chance to plan how to arrange everything once it’s delivered.

If you’re handling a DITY (Do-It-Yourself) move, check on how your belongings survived the trip and decide what to unpack first. Take a moment to locate essential features like the circuit breaker, water shut-off valve, and thermostat. Knowing where these are can save you from surprises later on.

Hour 2: Prioritize Your First-Night Essentials

Unpack your “open first” box to make your first night comfortable. This should include bedding, toiletries, basic kitchen supplies, and any other essentials. Set up your beds first—you’ll thank yourself later when you’re ready to crash after a long day.

If you’re doing a DITY move, this step is even more critical since you’ve packed these items yourself. Getting your essentials squared away will help everyone feel settled and ready to relax.

Hour 3: Activate Utilities and Establish Communication

Your new home needs power, water, and a connection to the outside world. If you’ve done a standard PCS move, your utilities should be set up, but double-check to make sure everything’s working. For DITY movers, confirm that your setup is good to go. Get your WiFi up and running so you can stay connected during the unpacking process. This is also a great time to test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms—safety first!

Hour 4: Secure Your Home Base

Your new space needs to feel safe and secure. Change the locks or rekey the doors to ensure you’re the only one with access. Check all windows and doors to make sure they lock properly—this is crucial, especially if your belongings haven’t arrived yet.

If you’ve been in and out during a DITY move, ensure everything is locked down. If you’re in an area with extreme weather, consider setting up a basic security system or reviewing emergency procedures.

Hour 5: Set Up a Functional Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home. Start by unpacking key kitchen items like pots, pans, and utensils so you can prepare simple meals. If your shipment is delayed, use what you brought with you—think coffee maker, microwave, or other small appliances.

For those on a DITY move, focus on getting your kitchen essentials in place. A functional kitchen will make your transition smoother and get you back to enjoying family meals.

Hour 6: Create Comfort for Your Pets

Moving can be tough on pets too. Set up a designated space with their bed, food, and water in a quiet area. Familiar items like favorite toys can help them feel more at ease. Take them for a quick walk around the neighborhood to help them adjust to their new environment. This also allows you to meet your neighbors and start building connections.

Hour 7: Make the Bathroom Ready for Relaxation

After a long day, you’ll want a well-stocked bathroom. Unpack toiletries, towels, and other essentials to make your bathroom ready for use. Ensure the water heater is working so you can enjoy a relaxing shower. If your items are delayed, use what you packed in your “open first” box to make the bathroom comfortable. Think of it as your mini-spa amid the chaos of moving.

Hour 8: Build Community Connections

Connecting with your new neighbors can make a huge difference in how quickly you settle in. Introduce yourself—it’s a simple step that can lead to lasting friendships. Ask for recommendations on local services like grocery stores or parks. Building these connections early helps your new environment feel more like home. Community is a big part of military life, so start building those ties immediately.

Hour 9: Take Time to Reflect and Unwind

You’ve accomplished a lot in just one day! Take a moment to relax and reflect. Whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea, watching a favorite show, or taking a quiet walk, this time is essential for decompressing after a busy day. Appreciate your hard work and the progress you’ve made. Reflecting on your achievements helps you stay positive and ready for the next steps.

Hour 10: Plan for the Next Day

Before you turn in for the night, take a few minutes to plan for tomorrow. Think about the boxes you still need to unpack and prioritize what will make the next few days more comfortable.

For DITY movers, consider what’s left to be done—whether it’s unpacking more boxes or making a quick run to the store for essentials. Having a plan will help you wake up feeling organized and ready to tackle the day.
